Patina 'Jezza' Cabernet Merlot
2003 Patina 'Jezza' Cabernet Merlot, Winsor Dobbin, August 2009
Wine of the Week: You've got to love a 2003 wine that's a current release; particularly one this good. Orange is fast emerging as one of Australia's best cool-climate wine regions and Californian-born Gerald "Jezza" Naef is making some of the most impressive wines from the Central West of NSW; wines that are at once complex and elegant. This is one of the first wines Naef made; a blend of caebernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc that has plenty of structure, soft tannins and length. Very impressive and potentially long lived. www.patinawines.com.au. $35.
2003 Patina 'Jezza' Cabernet Merlot, John Lewis, Newcastle Herald, 18 August 2010
"....This beautifully balanced blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and five per cent cabernet franc is garnet-hued and has berry pastille aromas. Bright, vibrant blackberry flavour stamps itself on the front of the palate and glace cherry, mint and herb fruit characters marry with spicy oak on the middle palate...more"

2003 Patina 'Jezza' Cabernet Merlot, Rick Allen, Manly Daily, August 2010
"Check the vintage. Yep, it's a current release and seven years old - you've got to love that. This is Patina's flagship red and the added time in the bottle has given it a chance to soften and allow the blackcurrant flavours of the cabernet to fully embrace the plummy characteristics of the merlot. There's some spice on the finish too. The end result is lovely drinking. Lamb cutlets for me. $35"
Patina Riesling
2008 Patina Riesling, Australian Wine Business Monthly WINE100, March 2010
"From the cool slopes of Mt. Canobolas, this is a Riesling with a convincing and complex array of exotic aromatics. Tropical stone fruits and sweet floral perfumes and a wiff of spice - the palate has plenty of flavour yet holds an elegant, smooth line. Superb 91 Points."
2008 Patina Riesling, Patina owner Gerald Naef is excited about the potential of riesling in Orange and has produced a very floral and aromatic wine. This is crisp and clean, elegant and floral with lively tropical fruit aromas, and a well-balanced finish with nuances of citrus." Winsor Dobbin, Australian Golf Magazine, August 2009 more...
Winewise Magazine: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED "An attractive, reserved, limey style that is an example of very pure cool-area riesling. The palate is clean, fine and linear with a cleansing twist of acid. Excellent Value. March 2009
2008 Patina Riesling, "Light on nose, good mouth feel. Youth holding it back but plenty just starting to emerge for future pleasure. 89 points now but will go higher with age and worth the money $19" Tony Keys, The Key Report, 27 May 2009

The following reviews featured in a short article in the Key Review of Wines, on February 18, 2010 by Tony Keys
2008 Patina Orange Region Sauvignon Blanc : Un-Savvy on the nose (that is, it didn’t reach down my throat and attempt to pull my stomach up from the inside.) Strong apple flavours and some interesting other flavours. 90 points good price at $20.
2007 Patina Orange Region Sauvignon Blanc: I admit it had a wonderful nose and like the 08 I found it hard to define. Very good texture to the wine, again most un-savvy like. The flavours quickly spread around the mouth with the complex winemaking (see Gerald Naef notes*) adding a definite complexity. 91 points and worth its $22
*Gerald Naef: ‘The ferment was split three ways with part fermented in new French oak, part in older French oak and the balance in stainless steel tank and aged on lees. If you are compelled to taste this wine one more time, my ambition has been achieved.’
2005 Patina Orange Region Sauvignon Blanc: If the two above develop like the 2005 (only a few cases left at winery) then they are up for more points down the track; it was a lovely wine showing lots of complexity. 93 points - ask the winery for the price.

2007 Patina Chardonnay, The Age & Sun Herald, Uncorked
"Patina, a boutique winery in NSW's Orange, has produced a fresh and lively unoaked chardonnay. Its not without complexity however. The nose has apple, white peach and citrus notes, and the palate is silky and rounded with vibrant fruit flavours. 4 Stars"

"This is the best Pinot I've tasted from Orange, the most exciting NSW region for this variety....I have encounted many $40-plus examples which are not as good."
2005 Patina Pinot Noir, Newcastle Herald, John Lewis
"This fruit-driven red suggests the vineyard is well suited to pinot noir. The wine is cherry red and has scents of violets and potpouri. Vibrant, sweet raspberry flavour features on the front palate and spearmint, cloves and vanillin oak characters are gathered in on the middle palate. Lingering berry fruit and soft earthy tannins combine at the finish. Rating: 4 out of 5."

Patina Merlot
2004 Patina Merlot, Australian Wine Business Monthly, March 2010
"Maybe it's odd to see an older vintage like the '04 but don't despair because time has worked some savoury magic. Lovely cedary notes and some fragrant cherry/berry fruits with meaty nuances. The palate speaks of the volcanic soils - quite precise, nicely ripe tannins and good even resolve. Drink now. 90 Points."
Patina Cabernet Sauvignon
2004 Patina Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Companion, James Halliday
"Bottle age has softened the fruit, but if anything, enhanced the length of the palate, with cedary oak comnplementing the rounded black fruits; fine tannins to close. Rating 90 points"
2004 Patina Cabernet Sauvignon, Winorama, Gary Walsh
"I had five red open on the bench last night and this is the one I drank most of.... A really enjoyable wine, toothsome and tasty, and considering the additional bottle age, sold at a very fair price." Rating 90 points."
2004 Patina Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Front, Campbell Mattinson
"The good thing about red wines that have been held back for a year or two is that they lose their shrill edges - and most of the time this means that they are, simply, better drinks. Rating 90 points"

"The Chardonnay has not had a brush with oak, so in my book, as pure as they come... It's a absolute beauty."

"I honestly don't get a chance to taste enough Mudgee wines. It's a pity because this is brilliant. Super rich plum fruit and spice is matched against a backdrop of charred honey and cedar. A wine to to enjoy now.
Rating 4.5 out of 5."

"In my opinion, it is a wine which will not only collect awards but friends as well."

"I love this wine , which could be described as a guilt-free sticky..." More...
2009 Patina Sticky Tea Riesling, Winewise Magazine, December 2009
"This is a genuinely interesting wine from the Orange region of New South Wales. The nose is perfumed and spicy and the palate combines medium-level sweetness with a slight phenolic grip and zippy acidity. An aperitif rather than a dessert style. ($22.00/375ml) Recommended"
2009 Patina Sticky Tea Riesling, Paul Ippolito, 5 Minute Rush, 26 May 2010
"This is a dessert wine that came into being almost accidentally out of the efforts of winemaker Gerald Naef. The lightness is the drawcard for me, it just goes places where other more substantial sweet and cloying dessert wines can only dream of. I like the synergies of the fruit imparted ever so fragrantly and subtly and yet with commensurate acidity and backbone, lifting it on the palate but not in an assertive way. Just perfect with fruit tarts and custard, the lingering long flavours just marry so well with the custard and tartness of the strawberries and kiwifruit. Something different and really appealing."
Drink Now. About $22 for 375ml. 7.6%.
90/100 – Very Good.
